When your newborn baby first arrived to the World, there is so much joy and excitements going on. Overwhelm feeling would be devastated if the parents don’t have enough preparation, planning or experience for their newborn child. The parents should be focusing on the vital necessity for their infant. One thing that almost neglected or overlook are the baby cribs. Cribs for babies are among the most important item for them and a part of their growing life. Your babies are most likely to spend lots of time sleeping in the first year of their life.
Even though they will start out on a bassinet or co-sleeper, but most babies preferred the cribs as their suitable sleeping place. At first, you may want your newborn to sleep in a bassinet by your bed, thus making it much easier for breastfeeding moms and closer monitoring. It would become a bit difficult for the parents to pick the right one as there are so many products and features upon the cribs for babies. Often time’s cribs are recalled simply due to some safety risk, and you should at least perform your own investigation ahead of you picks the one you would like to bring house. The following are the few fundamental criterion to consider while making decision upon cribs for babies.
The Cribs for Babies: The Materials
In general, the three main materials for baby cribs are wood, plastics, and iron. In terms of durability, the metal cribs (also plastic) are very sturdy and secure. But these so called synthetic products were reported to be not suitable for your baby’s health and skin. It creates an allergy upon their skin and its being defined that the compounds formed by reaction of air moisture with metals and plastics substance. Believe the fact that babies like to take a bite or ‘chew’ of something including their cribs. If safety and hazard free environment is your first priority, then consider the wooden made cribs. Wooden cribs normally made of fine quality wood like ash, beech, maple, pine, and oak as it is considered the best material for the baby’s health. Wooden materials should be stained or painted hardwoods and the use of inferior woods can potentially weaken or warp the slats.
The Cribs for Babies: The Mattress
The mattress should also be look into consideration as it is where your infant will sleep on. It should be comfortable and soft but the rigidity aspect should not be neglect as well. There seem to be a connection between Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and the babies sleeping pattern especially on their stomachs, particularly if they sleep on a soft mattress. A good sleeping position would be the back or the side way. Blankets and your baby are not necessarily a good mix; overheated and suffocating would occur. The mattress supports should be considered as well and the best option is a metal spring system where the entire mattress is supported and more durable. The mattress must be firm with tight fitting and there should be no missing or broken hardware.
The Cribs for Babies: Height Measurements
The height measurement between the mattress and the side bars is crucial for your child’s safety. The most common method among parents is to put the mattress at the highest position when at newborn stage because it is so much easier to change him in that position. And as your baby grown up a bit and becomes more active, the mattress height should be lowered accordingly. The distance between the top of the side bar and the mattress should be no more than 26 inches for the highest position. There is adjustable mattress heights available on all cribs with the three position option would be the wisest choice. Two height positions are still tolerable, but single height mattress is not a safe choice because infants will grow up as they will able to climb out or toppling out of the crib. You can change the height of most mattresses by simply raising or lowering the mattress support.
The Cribs for Babies: Drop Side Features
Drop side features on a crib are very convenient and probably the most used feature on any crib. Most parents go for a single drop down sided crib that allows them to easily lift baby out and to place their baby again in the crib. This feature is particularly convenient for the crib to be place against the wall (do not place it near the window, ever!). On the other hand, the double drop sided are popular option for parents whose having a special room to place the crib so it’s not against the wall. As per the fixed sides doesn’t have the drop down feature and tall people would preferred this type and occasionally using the crib. The knee push sides are the most common type and convenient for having baby in your arms. In terms of safety, the drop sides must be at least 9 inches above the mattress support when lowered. When the side is raised, the top must be at least 26 inches above the support at its lowest position.
The Cribs for Babies: Bumper Pads and Slats
Crib bumper pads are an additional of great concept and should be secured properly, as the risk might come to your baby like slipping between the bumpers and mattress; causing suffocates as a result. It should be anchored in no less than eight places with one at each corner of the crib. And at least two spaced evenly on each of the sides with the total of 16 ties all together for the top and bottom.
The slats or bars of the crib railing should be no more than 2 and 3/8 inches apart. This is close enough from preventing the baby’s head getting stuck or slipping through the slats. Second-hand or older baby cribs may also have splinters or lead paint as well as slats that are too far apart. That crib in the attic may be a beautiful antique, but it probably does not meet this safety standard. Be sure to check on the crib for sharp edges, points or anything else that could harm your baby.
The Cribs for Babies: Mobile on Wheels
The mobiles crib feature looks like a good addition, delightful and easy to mobilize anywhere you like. But the unfriendly functionality is that once the babies started to sit up on their own or worse with standing ability, the wheels should be take off to prevent them from getting tangled in it. The wheels on a crib are a great asset because it makes the crib easier to move whenever cleaning is required, retrieving dropped toys, or during changing of bedding. One other thing, just make sure the casters are strong and could turn easily.
The Cribs for Babies: Standard Specification
As stated by the Federal Safety Guidelines upon cribs for babies (since 1974), all manufacturer should and must meet the Government standard requirements set by the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC), the voluntary standards (ASTM F966, and F1169) as set by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), and the Juvenile Products Manufacturers’ Association (JPMA) certifies cribs that meet the safety standards.
The existence of danger upon crib for babies are most likely do exist, although sometimes the failure to recognize the hidden potential behind it is so clear. As the babies getting older, they will gain more strength and aggression which will affect their cribs. If they bounce back and forth from side to side, or shake the sides when they wake up and want attention, it can cause bolts to come loose. And when this happens, the bolts come loose; eventually the baby cribs can be dangerous in many, many ways. With that being said, these are the fundamental criterion of baby cribs the parents should firstly look into.
