Magnetic child locks are relatively the ‘new kids on the block’ when it comes to baby-proofing accessories for your house. Like the traditional child locks, these locks were designed to help keep babies out of cabinets, cupboards, drawers and just about any of your storage vaults and away from potentially harmful items and substances.
Most people are familiar with the traditional locks and clasps. However, many can agree that magnetic locks have raised the bar. The most obvious improvement is the use of magnetic technology.
How Do Magnetic Child Locks Work?
These locks are deemed as highly reliable because they snuggly secure doors and drawers. Besides the fact that they can be installed on most cabinet doors or drawers, they usually don’t require professional tools and screws to install. This means a parent without any ‘homemaking’ skills can confidently install these locks to keep their cabinets inaccessible to their precious babies.
Magnetic child locks typically include a set of locks, which is to be installed on the inner part of the door or drawer, and a set of keys. Once they are installed and setup, usually with an included adhesive patch, they can only be opened with the specific set of keys. How this really works is, when you close your door or drawer, the magnetic pull from the keys is what really allows you to be able to reopen it. So, you’ll find that the doors or drawers secured with these locks cannot be forced open, especially by a toddler.
Why Are Child Locks So Important?
If you’re a parent with a young child, you will see that there will come a time when your child starts to crawl and everything suddenly becomes fascinating. You will realize that at this stage you will find it hard to be ahead of them as they crawl to explore their various adventures, which might just be your cupboards, cabinets, or drawers. Surely, just the thought of your baby having easy access to these drawers and cabinets where you store your most valuable items as well as chemicals, medications and sharp objects, is pretty scary.
What then can you do? It is your responsibility to keep them out of these storage areas and away from danger. They are naturally oblivious to the potential harm it could cause them when they get a hold of one of those bottles of detergents, or even climb on open drawers. In fact, a Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) report has revealed that toddlers are highly susceptible to being injured by falling furniture or appliance, largely due to their genuine curiosity. So, it is your duty as parents to think about what is safe and what is not safe for your baby.
Are These Child Locks Really Safe?
Baby safety products are pretty easy to find online. But, when it comes to baby-proofing your house, the quality of the accessories should be high priority. It is very important to ensure that you select good quality accessories that are also practicable.
Magnetic child locks are designed to ensure that doors and drawers are inaccessible to babies once they are enabled, all while keeping your furniture and fixture intact. Additionally, you usually won’t have to worry about small objects falling off and ending up in your child’s mouth since the entire lock is tucked away inside the furniture or fixture. You will, however, have to ensure that the keys are not left in their reach as they can end up in their mouths. Or, they might try and successfully open doors or drawers, if they have seen you do it before.
So, with that said, as parents you are expected to still be vigilant about keeping things out of their reach and monitoring their every move as they explore.
